The Town Hall was conducted along the lines of a presidential debate, with questions gathered in advance from prospective audience members through a form on the website of the 71 Percent Coalition. Two moderators one each from the 71 Percent Coalition and Black Lives Matter (Utah Chapter) guided the discussion.

Utah loves to celebrate its pioneer story—ancestors who crossed borders and deserts fleeing persecution, searching for safety, faith and opportunity. We call that courage and grit. Today, however, as immigrants are hunted, detained and disappeared by an increasingly aggressive and unaccountable federal government, the values Utah claims are not the values its leaders are defending.

As McAdams sits out, Democratic candidates embrace the left at Salt Lake town hall.

Michael Farrell, a tax attorney, is campaigning on raising the federal minimum wage to $20 an hour, building more housing to lower rents, and establishing universal child care and paid parental leave.

Three of the seven Democratic candidates in the crowded field for the open seat showed up at the Salt Lake City elementary school to chat up prospective delegates and deliver a minute-and-a-half speech.

They were former U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams, who was Utah’s most recent Democrat in Congress, state Sen. Nate Blouin and attorney Michael Farrell.

Candidates for Utah’s newly created 1st Congressional District brought their message to a younger audience Saturday on the campus of Salt Lake Community College presented by Ignite! Utah.

When he ran for Congress twice before in a Republican district, Ben McAdams built his brand around being a moderate. McAdams was the most conservative Democrat in the House during his time there years ago.

Michael Farrell said the newly surfaced posts "grossed him out" and he believes Blouin should drop out of the race.

"This reflects who Nate is, despite any political bullshit he's putting out now," Farrell said. "It's all well and fine to apologize, but I don't think we need to send someone to Congress who jokes about child pornography. Where's the joke?"

“It’s all well and fine to apologize for saying these things, but Nate is obviously not fit to serve in elected office,” Farrell said. The post about filming an underage sister should be “disqualifying from holding public office” and voters should be “removing the Epstein class from politics, not electing folks like Nate Blouin,” a reference to the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

This moment represents a major shake-up in the race.

“I would have said before this morning that it was absolutely a Ben McAdams, Nate Blouin race and not a lot of confounding variables. But women in that district might have feelings that they didn't have yesterday.”

The state’s Democratic leaders are condemning Blouin’s comments, calling them “beyond unacceptable.”

Democratic rival candidate Michael Farrell is on-record as demanding that Blouin should drop out of the District 1 race.

Online posts attributed to Utah congressional hopeful Nate Blouin were reported on Wednesday, prompting a public apology from the Bernie Sanders-backed progressive and a call from a fellow Democrat to leave public office.

"These comments … are offensive and personally hurtful to us and to the people we represent," Blouin's Democratic colleagues in the Legislature wrote in a statement that called his posts "beyond unacceptable."

Meanwhile, Michael Farrell, a Democrat who is running against Blouin, called on him to withdraw from the race.
